Join us in ensuring all Mississippi kids have access to enough food during the summer!

Summer is the hungriest time of the year for the millions of families who rely on free and reduced-price meals during the school year. To help fill the gap, Congress created the SUN Bucks program (formerly known as Summer EBT) that provides $120 per school-age child in grocery-buying benefits to low-income families. While most states with both Democratic and Republican governors have chosen to implement the program, Mississippi still has not.

By opting into the SUN Bucks program, Mississippi can ensure 324,000 kids across the state don't go hungry during the summer months. This would also bring the state an estimated $38,880,000 in federal funding that will go directly to families in need as grocery benefits that would be spent at local grocery stores and farmers markets, providing an additional economic boost to local communities.

Springboard to Opportunities is a nonprofit organization in Jackson, Mississippi working alongside families in federally-subsidized housing as they pursue their goals in school, work, and life. When Mississippi decided not to participate in the SUN Bucks program, we created a summer cash disbursement program to provide additional resources for our residents to address the critical issue of food insecurity among children during the summer months.

By providing monthly payments equivalent to the amount in grocery benefits that would have been provided by SUN Bucks ($40 per school-aged child per month), Springboard’s summer cash program allowed parents to cover the additional food costs they incur during the summer and helped ensure families did not go hungry.
